Opening hours (In general):

Usually the shops and supermarkets follow the following times:

SMALL SHOPS:

From monday till friday, they usually open from 10:00 to 14:00 and from 17:00 to 20:00. On Saturday, some of the shops only open in the morning. It is getting more common that the shops of the centre do not close at midday, especially the famous clothes brand shop who also stay open until 21:00.

SMALL SUPERMARKETS AND GROCERY STORES

They usually close at midday as well, from 14:00 to 17:00 and on Saturday afternoon too, More important supermarkets stay open all day from 10:00 to 22:00 from Monday to Saturday.

On Sunday, they are usually closed. Only a few shops of the city centre dedicated to tourism and visitors are open.

• RESTAURANTS

In Spain people usually eat 3 meals a day with snack in between.

For the 3 main meals, restaurants are open:

BREAKFAST:

From 7:30 till 10:30

LUNCH:

From 13:30 till 16:00.

DINNER:

From 21:00 till around 23:30.

In the small restaurants, bars and cafeteria, it´s possible to eat at anytime (nearly).

• BANKS

Banks open from 8:30 till 14:00 from Monday to Friday. From October till April they also open on Saturday from 9:00 till 13:00. Some banks open in the afternoon (usually on Thursday) from 17:00 till 19:30 from October till April and other are open every afternoon all year long.

• PUBLIC SERVICES

Most of the public services (Town Hall, Health Centre, Public Administration...) are open from 9:00 till 14:00 but it is getting more and more common for those organisations to open also in the afternoon (Junta de Castilla y Leon, Post office...)

LEGAL ADVICE FOR STUDENT VISAS:

• WHO NEEDS A VISA?

Students not coming from one of the 27 countries of the European Union need a visa to stay in Spain.

Countries of the European Union: Germany, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Spain, Finland, France, United Kingdom, Greece, Czech Republic, Italy, Republic of Ireland, Luxemburg, Netherlands, Portugal, Sweden, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, Slovenia, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Cyprus, Malta and Romania.

The policy for visas offers different possibilities that are expressed in the "Ley de Extranjeria" (immigration law) and in the Regulations related to it and in which you will find a special section for incoming foreign students.

• GET A STUDENT VISA

Things to do before coming to Spain:

1- Apply for a student visa at the Spanish Consulate of your country of residence. You will have to add to it the accreditation of the classes taken and the necessary diplomas.

2- Present the document that certifies your admission at the public or private institution where you want to study. If the programmes of studies is planned to last less than 6 months you will not have to renew your visa in Spain. If you are to stay more than 6 months, your visa will be considered provisional and you will have to renew it 3 months after it was emitted.

When arriving in Spain:

You have to visit the Immigration Department or the Police of the province where you are studying and apply for an authorization to stay for student or a student card. The authorization will not be necessary if you have a visa and you are not staying more than 6 months.

Health services

In Spain, Health care is free for citizen of the EU who hold the European Health Insurance Card and provided in the health centres or at home if you cannot move. the basic health services are provided by the State.

The health insurance, the "seguridad social" covers nearly any type of health care. The medicines prescribed by a doctor from the Register of the National Health Insurance are nearly paid in full by the state. In any heath centre you will be given all the information you need about the Spanish Health System.

In addition, Spain has special agreements with Andorra, Brazil, chile, Ecuador, Paraguay and Peru.

If you come from any other country, even if you will be seen and helped in case of emergency, this service is not free, we therefore recommend that you subscribe to a medical insurance.
